Duke Grants Dashboard
The Duke Doing Good Employee Giving program needed a clear, accessible way to show staff how donated funds were being used. My task was to design a dashboard that simplified this information while still allowing for deeper exploration. As the project evolved, the scope expanded to include a set of healthcare-related grants too.
Approach
I began by identifying the key questions employees would want answered: Where did the money go? What causes were supported? Who was impacted? To support these needs, I designed:
Sorting controls — dropdown menus for filtering by grant type and by year.
Focus area highlights — visualizations showing funds directed to health, housing, education, community, and employment, aligning with how employees earmark donations.
Distribution views — charts illustrating how funds were allocated across categories.
Impact details — a table listing grantees, project names, funds awarded, and the number of people reached.
Outcome
The final dashboard balances high-level transparency with the ability to drill down into specifics. Employees could quickly see the scope of their collective impact while also exploring the details behind each grant. The goal was to make the data both approachable and trustworthy, strengthening the confidence in the program and encouraging continued participation.
All numbers and names are illustrative and do not reflect actual campaign results.
