ABOUT ME
Hi, I'm Elizabeth Hammond — an illustrator and drummer based in Durham, NC.
I draw from life and imagination, including animals, people, neighborhoods, and oddball things that happen in ordinary places. My work is made with ink and watercolor, and I'm always chasing a line or a color that feels more alive than realistic.
After a long career in UX and web design I walked away in 2025 to spend more time making things with my hands: drawing, painting, and playing drums. It turned out that was exactly the right decision.
What you'll find here
Prints, greeting cards, and stickers in my online shop, along with a portfolio of recent work. I also take on custom illustration projects — if you have something in mind, let's talk.
My path as an illustrator
I didn't go to art school, though I've always drawn. My education has come from classes at UNC Chapel Hill, the Carrboro Art Center, and Piedmont Community College, combined with years of looking at artists I love and figuring out what I like about them. I've been building a consistent practice since around 2000 and I'm still discovering new things every time I sit down to draw. I expect that to continue indefinitely.
Drumming
I’m a native North Carolinian who grew up in Charlotte, and I’ve called Durham home for the past decade. Back in the mid-1990s, I moved to Chapel Hill and was lucky to land right in the middle of its incredible music scene. Not long after, I joined a band and have been drumming ever since. Over the years I’ve played in a range of Durham/Chapel Hill projects, including The Pinkslips, Wembley, Horizontal Hold, Scene of the Crime Rovers, and my new band, beas. My tastes lean toward the weird side of indie rock and pop, and I think you could safely put all of those bands in that category.
